Citizens across the world (and legal residents) in the United States is entitled to some form of federal assistance – WORLDWIDE! No matter how you win or how you're poor, you are entitled to some form of public assistance. Many people believe they earn too much to qualify with the government and renounce their rights and spend lots of money of their own money for college.

Federal Student Aid is available in three forms: grants, loans and work-study programs.

Most people have heard of the Pell Grant – to originally called Basic Educational Opportunity Grant (GGO), and named for Senator Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island, who died on 1 January 2009 (some information here). The Pell Grant is aimed at low-income students. Statisticians use the Pell Grant as a marker to determine Economic diversity university student in particular (a little more information.) Then came the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), published students with extreme financial need.

Three other less-known grants are also available: the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) National Math and Science Grant Retention alias, the National SMART Grant, and a new Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education grant or to teach. The ACG is for students who have completed a rigorous high school curriculum with distinction and applies to the first two years of college. The objectives of the SMART Grant mathematics, science, technology, and engineering students in their final two years (third year, if a program five years). These two items are passed over the Pell Grant. The grant aims to teach students preparing to become teachers and are willing to work in an area that requires significant low-income areas.

These are grants and do not have to be repaid.

The loan program is the predominant Stafford loans for students and PLUS loans for parents and graduate students. These federal loans are at the confluence of two programs loans, the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) and the Ford Federal Direct Loan Program.

Now, get ready for the little shell game to help understand these loans. It is a kind of matrix with FFEL and direct loans through the top and Stafford and PLUS along the coast. Programs FFEL and Direct loans differ as to where the loan. Under FFEL, the loan by a commercial lender (bank, credit union, etc.) within direct loan, the loan comes directly from the federal government. The Stafford and PLUS may come from the source or sources of direct FFEL.

The Stafford then divided into subsidized and unsubsidized loans. Subsidized loans are awarded based on need, the government pays the interest while the student is in school. The allowance is not based on need and interest accrues while the student studies.

PLUS loans are based on credit check parent. These can be reimbursed 60 days after loan is disbursed or 6 months after the student completes or leaves school.

All person is entitled to at least the unsubsidized Stafford Loan regardless of your income.

You must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to request a federal grant or loan http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

Loans are good if you can not afford the cost of college. However, I am no great defender of the loans. The student could easily end up with payment loan size of a mortgage payment and have no home to show for it. I do not think any school in the country worth much. But I had parents do not agree with me and borrow more than $ 150,000 (combined for pupils and parents) to put their children in college at high prices.

Was not easier to make better grades and higher SAT scores and ACT?
